Inspiration: Lex talionis is a latin phrase meaning "the law of talion". Talion means "a punishment identical to the offence" -- an eye for an eye, as they say.
Lex is, as its name implies, a story of revenge and dealing out that revenge with the same mercy that was paid to the protagonist. In this case, that would be none. The idea came about simply by the want to focus on an assassin and the life that would entail. The idea eventually progressed into a story of its own worth when the idea of swapping roles came into play. An assassin is used to killing those they know little about, but what if that same policy was applied to something -- or someone -- they care for? In a general sense, Kill Bill and Assassin's Creed 2 played a part in seeing this story come to life.
